You might be thinking... "No that's wrong" or "I'm not sure" or maybe even "I disagree". Let's seriously think of some major questions and issues people have with the Christian Gospel. Maybe you will find your thoughts below! Let's take a look!
1. “I don’t know, and you are scaring me… I DON’T WANT TO THINK ABOUT IT”
In most walks of life this attitude is dangerous. My sister, a medical doctor, has spoken to me about the tragedy of people who deny that they have a medical problem, something that could be sorted, but they leave it until its too late. Don't leave it too late for your soul. The poet Thomas Grey once said “Ignorance is bliss, ‘tis folly to be wise” but we all recognise that is many instances of life this is completely untrue. “Ignorance is dangerous” would often be more accurate.
Think of the sinking of S.S. Titanic in 1912… Many of the passengers were ignorant of their danger, so much so that the early lifeboats sailed away with lots of room still available onboard. “If they had only known” we now say “they could have avoided the danger” - they could have been saved. Some knew but wouldn’t accept that it was true… and no doubt perished with the 1500 souls that went down.
Please face up to the truth of the Bible – don’t close your eyes to your danger. Jesus Christ, the Son of God asked the rhetorical question “what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? (Mark 8:36) It will be a tragedy for you to go down into God’s righteous judgement when you could have been saved… to perish when you could have availed of the “Lifeboat” who is the Lord Jesus Christ. He died that you might live. He is alive forevermore. Turn to Him, trust in Him, not in the words of mere men... if you do you will be saved from Judgment. He says that the “the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out” (John 8:36)
2. Surely only bad people go to hell, I’m a good person… I wouldn’t do anyone any harm.
There are many people who think this. They relegate hell in their minds to a place just for mass murderers, and rapists, people like Hitler, Stalin, and Anders Breivik. They are happy to have a warm fuzzy feeling about themselves… they are just fine, God could only bring them to heaven. They don’t even feel that they should consult the Bible, God’s word, to see what it says. They trust their own gut instincts about their whole future! Doesn’t this seem a bit unwise?
Well, let’s face it, what does the Bible say?
Who will escape Hell?
The truest Man who ever lived, the Lord Jesus Christ said “Unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:5). So to escape perishing we must repent of our sins and turn to God. Agree with God’s verdict about us that we are all sinners and guilty of doing wrong… and turn to God through His Son. Have you ever repented?
Another famous verse is John 3:36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." This tells us that the person who believes in the Son (of God, Jesus Christ), that is who trusts in Him entirely, has everlasting life (i.e. will be in Heaven) but whoever doesn’t trust the Son, will not see life but the wrath (anger) of God abides on him… (i.e. will go to the lake of fire).
So the stipulations for having your sins forgiven and avoiding Hell are:
1. Repenting, that means changing your mind about yourself, God and the Lord Jesus Christ. Realising you need a Saviour.
2. Believing in the Son of God, who will grant you eternal life in his grace. It is a free gift, we could never earn it. Please note, it is not believing about Christ - Many people believe about him. He is a figure of History to them. It is rather believing in Christ, that is trusting in Him as a Saviour, grasping hold of His outstretched hands, relying on His strength to bring you home to heaven.
Who will go to Hell?
As there is no record of their repentance and faith in Christ, people like Hitler will no doubt be there, and will forever pay for their sins as there are degrees of punishment for God is a just God, however there will be many other people there as well.
I quote the Bible as my authority. Listen to God speaking…
“The cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death." Revelation 21:8
This is a list of the types of people who will be in hell forever. Do you fit into any of these categories?
The cowardly… are you afraid to trust Christ? Do friends or family hold you back?
Unbelieving… Do you simply not trust Christ? Do you not believe in Him? Do you scorn His message? This is your sure passport to the lake of fire.
Abominable… if your sins aren’t forgiven and cleansed away God sees you as spiritually unclean and abominable, unfit for His presence
Murderers… have you murdered someone? Or have you ever hated someone which is, according to Christ, like murder in the heart.
Sexually immoral … have you slept with someone outside of marriage? Or even lusted after someone who was married to someone else, Christ said that this is like adultery in your heart.
Sorcerers… those who are involved in the dark arts of witchcraft can expect to be there…
Idolaters… those who put another god, anything (or anyone), above the God of heaven and worship it instead will be there.
All liars … ever told a lie? Ever play-acted a lie? All liars will be there. This is pretty extensive isn’t it? You can see Hell not just for Hitler. This is God’s standard; we have fallen short of it and sinned against Him. Because the Lord Jesus Christ died of the Cross for our sins and was raised again from the dead, we can be forgiven of all the above sins, they can be cleansed away making us pure before God. He will look upon us in Christ and will not see the sins anymore. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Isn’t it wonderful that he offers us forgiveness at all! Trust Him today and know the joy of sins forgiven and a sure hope of heaven – be satisfied with nothing less.
Heaven or Hell? Choose life by trusting Christ today.
The Bible says of Heaven “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." Then He who sat on the throne said, "Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithful." And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. – Revelation 21:4-6
3. Surely no-one believes the Bible now… is this really relevant? Have scientists not refuted the Bible?
This is a common misconception. Popularised by the mass media and drummed into the brains of millions every day. Much as the Nazis used propaganda to such good effect in the 1930’s and 1940’s so the Devil has been drumming error and lies into people’s heads for centuries in different ways and in different cultures.
He used religion and ignorance to great effect for many centuries (the fallacy of earning God’s favour, instead of seeking God’s forgiveness in Christ). He used superstition and ignorance in the middle ages. He now uses science and ignorance.
Any scientist, worth his salt, will tell you that they haven’t disproved the existence of God. Even one of the most recognisable and god-hating, Richard Dawkins has had to admit that there 'may be' a transcendent being, “I cannot be sure that God does not exist” says he, and that from a man that has ridiculed the message of God and the Bible for years. There are a number of very able scientists who accept the existence of God and who believe the message of the Bible.
If you are interested see the debate hosted by Fixed Point Foundations, between Dawkins vs Lennox at Oxford. Its found in this link to Youtube.
I myself have a degree in a medical science discipline however I am not writing this to merely win your minds but to speak to your conscience.
God exists and has spoken to us in many ways. This God is a great God. He has left his fingerprint on the sky for the heavens declare his glory. We see design in every corner of our universe and of our planet. We even can even look at ourselves and the language in our DNA and must admit that such a genius of design cries out for a designer.
“For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse” Romans 1:20
We not only have his fingerprint in the sky but His recording on our hearts. Our conscience cries out that there is such a thing as right and wrong; as good and evil. Away with any thought that there is no such thing as evil. The wickedness of the human heart has been seen before our eyes too often for us to deny it. Some things are plain wrong!! Bad! Who told us? Where does our moral sense come from – it is recorded in our hearts. God says that this is true. (Read Romans 2).
This God is a moral God. He has physical laws that he has placed in the universe and also moral laws. He is a God of Justice and will judge the world. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
He holds us accountable for our actions and will judge us accordingly. He has given us His word. He gave the Law of God to Moses and the children of Israel. They declare his uprightness and purity and what He expects from us.
No one can keep the Law perfectly. It is a mirror which show up the black badness and sin of our hearts. They were given to show us that we need a Saviour to rescue us. That’s why God sent his Son.
The Old Testament – gives hundreds of direct prophecies which were literally fulfilled in the coming into this world of the Lord Jesus, the Son of God. Where he would be born, when he would be presented as King to the nation, that he would be rejected, that he would be crucified, That he would bear our sins in His body on the tree, that he would rise again from the dead. This shows the accuracy and reliability of the Bible.
This God is a Saviour God.
“God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:17-18
God could have sent His Son to destroy the world, but He rather sent Him to save it. How wonderful. This shows the grace and kindness of God. His love towards us. We have sinned but He provided a Saviour. His Son came to pay the debt, to bear the punishment that we might go free.
I love the words of the Children’s Song
“He did not come to judge the world,
He did not come to blame,
He did not only come to seek,
It was to save He came,
And when we call Him Saviour,
We call Him by His Name”
Christ died and rose again. He was seen after the resurrection by over 500 people who were reliable witnesses (read 1 Corinthians 15). Their lives were completely transformed.
People’s lives are still being transformed today. There are living witnesses to the power of this message. Trust Him today.
